Light painting is an imaging technique that uses a moving light source to add light to and under-illuminated subject while taking a long-exposure photograph. A scene or object can be brought to life by painting with a beam of light.
Light painting artist/photographer Darren Pearson first discovered light painting after seeing an image from Gjon Mili that captured Pablo Picasso creating a light drawing call "Picasso Draws A Centar". the influence of Picasso's light drawing can be seen in Darren's work as many of his light painting images are created using similar techniques. Daren lives in Los Angeles and says one of the most difficult parts of creating his light drawings is finding a good spot without ambient light or sketchy night people.
To create a light painting, Darren waits until dusk or evening and sets his camera on a tripod. He then takes a photo with an exposure of between two and seven minutes. While the the shutter is open he jumps in front of the camera and paints with various tools that resemble flashlights.
Darren has created light paintings for companies, such as Reebok and Honda and he has even developed his own ingenious light painting tool called the night writer.
I have chosen Darren Pearson because his work really interests me and is something I have tried an enjoyed in the past. It provides me with many potential composition options and does not require specific weather conditions or locations that which are not accessible.
I plan on using Darren's work as inspiration for my project. I intend on painting light features that you would usually find in its place. For example, i will paint flowers on forest floors or animals in the trees. Darren uses little or no photoshop in his images but due to my lack of skill I may have to rely on it in some cases.
